Quick dinner tonight… nothing fancy, just one of those simple meals that always hits.

This is straight comfort food — buttery noodles, soft cabbage, sweet onions, and a lot of flavor from just a few basic ingredients.

It’s simple, filling, and the kind of meal that proves you don’t need much to make something good.

Serves

About 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 head cabbage, thin sliced
  • 2 sweet onions, thin sliced
  • 1 (12 oz) bag medium egg noodles
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: pinch of sugar if you like it slightly sweet

Instructions

  1. Melt 1 stick of butter in a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced cabbage and onions.
  3. Cook, stirring occasionally, until everything softens and cooks down. You want the cabbage tender and the onions mellow and sweet.
  4. While that cooks, boil the egg noodles according to the package directions.
  5. Drain the noodles and add them directly into the cabbage and onion mixture.
  6. Add the remaining 1 stick of butter and toss everything together until fully coated.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. If you like it a little sweeter, add a small pinch of sugar and mix again.

Why This Works

  • Simple ingredients with big comfort-food payoff
  • Soft cabbage and sweet onions balance the rich buttered noodles
  • Easy enough for a quick weeknight dinner
  • Also works really well as a side dish

Notes

  • This is great on its own, but also pairs well with sausage, pork, or kielbasa.
  • If reheating leftovers, add a splash of water or a little extra butter to loosen it back up.
  • The small pinch of sugar is optional, but it does work well if you like that sweet-savory balance.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.

Reheat in a skillet over low heat or in the microwave. Add a splash of water or a little extra butter if needed.
